Sushi Guide

Welcome to the Sushi Guide.

Sushi has been around for a surprisingly long period of time, although not in its present form. The history of sushi is an interesting tale of the evolution of a simple dish. What was to become sushi was first mentioned in China in the second century A.D. Originally, sushi arose out of a way of preserving food. Fish was placed in rice and allowed to ferment, which allowed an individual to keep the fish edible for some time. The rice was thrown away and the fish was eaten when needed or wanted

Common types of Sushi:

Nigiri consists of a small pile of seasoned rice shaped using both hands. A thin piece of fish like tuna or shrimp is draped on top. Sometimes, a nori belt (thin strip of seaweed) is used to keep the fish from falling off.

The base of maki sushi consists of seasoned rice, wasabi and a wrap of toasted nori seaweed. A variety of tasty morsels like raw tuna and vegetables are rolled in the seaweed. It is cut into 6 or 8 pieces.

A hand roll is a  type of sushi consists of a piece of nori seaweed that is shaped like a cone and filled with seasoned rice, wasabi and a variety of fresh ingredients.

Swing dancing and Jazz originated in New Orleans in the 1890's.

Through the rise and fall of the stock market in the 1920's and throughout the Depression years,  Jazz and Swing dancing brought Americans together, allowing them to forget their troubles for awhile.
